For those Jacks of all trades, masters of none, there is Ninety Three Studios.
Ninetythrees.com takes a topic and explores all components of it via video, text, links, and interviews. And this machine of information - one that could give Wikipedia a run for its money - spits out 93 bits of information.
Need to know about the Zombie Apocalypse? They’ve got all the survival tips you need. Want to learn about the death of the newspaper? They’ve got all those gruesome details as well.
With a weekly web series, a Facebook page, Google Friend Connect, a Twitter account, and various other ways to stay in the know, Ninety Three Studios has come up with nearly 93 ways you can stay informed about a wide variety of topics. And they want you to be involved.
Ninety Three Studios consider themselves a group of storytellers who use the web to tell their stories. And they’re happy to let anyone join in on the fun. They write and publish books, allowing a user to write the final chapter – to get the last word in. As someone who has been trying to write a book for as long as I can remember, the thought of submitting an idea and having someone else do all the work, and then allowing me to swoop in to leave a memorable footprint at the very end ... now that sounds too good to be true.
Some of the videos are clips from Dr. Seuss cartoons, which provide a lesson on storytelling. One video I watched was accompanied by this advice on storytelling: "Don’t be afraid to make a few things up." The advice goes on to share words of wisdom from the children’s author along with an example of IDEO, the well renowned design firm. The author explains that the team at IDEO will come up with dozens of irrational ideas before finding the right idea to go with. There is great value in letting one's imagination run wild, as in every idea there “is some conceptual truth that can be harvested and used to make something better.” Great advice for all the storytellers out there, advice that probably exists in some Writing for Dummies book, 200 pages in.
In this instant gratification era, the web format that Ninety Three Studios uses is a great way to quickly educate the user in a pain-free way. Check it out. See if there’s a topic they’ve explored that you want to know more about. And if you don’t see that topic, shoot them an email with your idea. They may just come up with 93 bits of information on the topic for you and put it into a book. And maybe you can write the ending.
