onedreamrush: 42 films by 42 directors lasting 42 seconds

When advertising marries art, it's unsettling. But maybe that's the intention, be it sinister or playful, of both the artists and the advertisers involved in onedreamrush.

The project was commissioned by vodka brand 42 Below, with the obvious intention of selling lakes of vodka, but also of featuring several generations of independent filmmakers, and even some who would best be classified as storytellers outside of cinema. The list includes Kenneth Anger, Jonas Mekas, David Lynch, Larry Clark, Harmony Korine, Lou Ye, Gaspar Noe, Asia Argento, Tadanobu Asano, James Franco, Leos Carax, Mike Figgis, Abel Ferrara, Cat Power, Ryan McGinley, Taika Watiti, Floria Sigismondi and Universal Everything's Matt Pyke.

Each director was given a tiny budget of $10,000 to create their film, with total creative freedom to express "how we dream."

"One of their [42 Below's] values is to be pure, raw, edgy and independent," says Rajan Mehta, founder of New York-based creative studio Dagr Nott & Associates. "So let's let the filmmakers do what they want. Let's not make it about you, let's make it about dreams. Let's make it about a canvas that all these filmmakers will get excited about."

The films debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in May and in China at the National Film Museum in Beijing. They were supposed to be viewable online at 42x42.com, but we weren't able to find them there. According to Boards Magazine (the primary source we pilfered for this article) 42 Below decided, "It would play better at film festivals and more intimate screening events."

Acclaimed director Chris Milk (chrismilk.com), best known for directing music videos for Kanye West, U2 and Green Day, did release his film entitled Last Day Dream. It's life moments in 42 seconds. Impressive.
